Top Op Barley Whole (also known as Jav) is a fiber-rich, ancient grain with a slightly nutty flavour and a chewy, satisfying texture. Unlike pearl barley, which has been polished to remove the bran, whole barley (hulled) retains its nutrient-dense outer layer, making it one of the healthiest grain choices available.
Culinary Versatility Whole barley is a classic addition to hearty soups, stews, and casseroles, where it absorbs savoury liquids while maintaining its structure. It can be used as a wholesome alternative to rice in risotto (often called Orzotto) or served as a cold grain base for salads. In Indian tradition, it is also used to make Barley Water, a refreshing and detoxifying drink, or ground into meal for porridge.
Preparation and Cooking Due to its intact outer hull, whole barley requires a longer cooking time than other grains. It is highly recommended to soak the grains overnight to soften the fiber and reduce the stovetop time. To cook, use a 1:3 ratio of barley to water or broth. Bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat for about 40–50 minutes until tender and chewy. A pressure cooker can reduce this time significantly to about 15–20 minutes.
